Inhumane inequalities continue to be an abhorrent feature of our common humanity. One of the most tried and tested interventions to combat poverty is direct cash transfer, empowering individuals to meet their most urgent needs—whether it’s food, education, or starting a small business.
As our world leaders are increasingly failing their responsibility to help people in need, our individual responsibility becomes even more acute. But I can’t do this alone; Ending global poverty is a communal undertaking.

Direct cash transfers
Around 700 million people live in extreme poverty today, getting by with under 2.25 dollars a day. These people are often malnourished, lack access to basic services such as electricity and clean drinking water, have fewer opportunities for education, and have worse health in general.
GiveDirectly make direct cash transfers to people in extreme poverty and those affected by humanitarian crises. To give them cash directly in-hand is a good way to help them out of poverty. The initiative has been subjected to several comprehensive reviews, and the research shows that the cash recipients have a good overview over their own needs. They choose to use the funds in ways that cover their basic needs, and make investments that give good returns over time.
For every 100 NOK donated to GiveDirectly around 90 NOK go straight to the recipients. GiveDirectly male such transfers on a large scale and have since 2009 given over 700 million dollars in cash to over 1.5 million people in need.

Tax deduction for Norway
In 2025 you can get a deduction in your taxable income up to a total yearly value of 25000 NOK per person or company that donates. Donations that qualify give 22% of their value in deduction, which gives up to 5500 NOK less in tax.
This also counts for donations given to this event. Log into “My page” with the e-mail address you used for the donation and register your national identity number. We will then report the donation to the tax authorities at the beginning of next year.
