✨🦟 Optio Impact 🦟 ✨

✨🦟 Optio Impact 🦟 ✨

As we’re heading into the holiday season, I’d like to invite you all to join this year’s Christmas fundraiser in support of the Malaria Consortium, through Gi Effektivt.
For those who don’t know, this has become a bit of a tradition for me — and in previous years, my teams managed to raise some impressive amounts:
- 2023 (Meta, 35 people): 50 000 NOK 💰
- 2022 (Meta, 20 people): 20 000 NOK 🙌
🦟 Why Malaria Consortium?
As we in Optio would like to put our money where it gives the best return on investment, we should do the same when doing good and donate to the most effective charities. Malaria is a horrible disease which kills around 500 000 people each year, most of them children. This is more than even humans, which kills around 435 000 people each year excluding wars according to Deadliest Animal Comparison ↗. Yet it’s cheap and highly effective to prevent (around 70 NOK to treats a kid with a full course of medicine). This means our collective effort could protect thousands of lives.
🎯 Milestones & fun We’ll keep a few light-hearted milestones to celebrate along the way:
- 50 000 NOK: I’ll host "Friday Wins" in a costume 🎭
- 75 000 NOK: I’ll shave off my moustache 🧔‍♂️✂
- 100 000 NOK: I’ll bake cake for the whole office 🍰
Let’s make this season about generosity and impact — and see if we can beat Meta’s record while saving lives in the process 💪❤️
Gi Effektiv routes the money to the Malaria Consortium without taking any fees. This makes it cheaper for you as a donor to donate, so that more lives can be saved. Gi Effektivt also have sister organizations in most of the countries we are operating in:
- Poland - Wiecej Dobra
- Spain - Ayuda Efectiva
- India - Impactful Giving
- UK and US - Giving What We Can or GiveWell
- Germany - Effektiv Spenden
- Sweden - Ge Effektivt
- Denmark - Giv Effektivt

Medicine against malaria

Malaria is a deadly disease that is spread to humans through certain types of mosquitoes in tropical countries. Malaria is treatable and preventable but is nonetheless one of the diseases that kills most children every year. In 2022 there were 250 million cases of malaria, and over 600 000 humans died of the disease. Malaria affects mainly people living in Africa, and four out of five deaths is of a child under five years as they are at risk of more severe sickness.
Malaria Consortium distributes preventive malaria medicine to children between three months and five years. They get four to five doses of the vaccine during the high season for contagion.
This treatment is a very cost-effective way to prevent malaria, and it costs around 70 NOK to protect a child against malaria for one season. Research furthermore shows that protection from malaria can be beneficial for other factors later in life, such as achieving higher incomes.
Gi Effektivt recommends Malaria Consortium because they have experience with large, successful programmes in seven countries and because they have great growth potential.
